Farewell to an old friend?
Our guest blogger Tracey Dawson wonders whether the website is on the way out
Guest blogger Tracey Dawson shares the Adventure Collective’s joy in helping outdoor businesses make a better living from what they do. Specifically, Tracey’s expertise lies in communication, whether that’s writing copy for outdoor businesses’ websites, managing social media campaigns or advising on the best marketing tools, from email to AI.
It is with a heavy heart, I’ve been hearing some businesses are saying farewell to an old friend - The Humble Website.
Yes, you read that right, it seems like websites are on the way out. Or are they… Keep reading on to find out more.
Once upon a time, websites ruled the digital world. But oh, how the mighty have fallen according to some experts.
Let's take a moment to reminisce about the good old days when websites were more than just an afterthought as Social Media now rules the WORLD.
Dial-up, dial-up - but put the kettle on first
Remember the dulcet tones of a dial-up connection? The noise of beeps, boops, and screeches, signalled your journey into the digital realm like a scene out of ‘The Matrix’! My guess is some of you won’t even know what I’m talking about here, but today, if a website takes more than two seconds to load, we're ready to move on and find one that’s faster and that website may have lost a potential client.
Blogging it…
And then there are blogs.
Blogs were once about sharing wisdom, memes, and questionable life advice but OMG they have evolved into so much more.
Blogs are still very much alive, read, and repurposed for Social Media and for some a key part of a thriving business.
So what about websites? Well, hold on to your trojan horse…Some say that websites are DEAD.
BUT……
Your biggest digital asset!
Websites are not only alive and kicking they are still thriving! And I might add, your main digital asset.
You are only renting a space on someone else's land when you use Social Media and they can put up the rent, kick you off their land, or sell your rights on without warning.
Businesses, take note! Your website is the hero waiting to be rediscovered. While Social Media platforms may be stealing the limelight, your website is the command centre, the base camp of your online presence.
Direct traffic, from the virtual peaks of Instagram mountain, the valleys of Facebook, and the sea of LinkedIn to your website.
Utilize your website as the Ultimate Adventure Hub – a place where clients can find inspiration, available events, nav guides, and tales from previous adventures.
So, fear not, for the website is not extinct. It's merely evolving, adapting, and ready to lead the next generation of Internet Explorers to new heights. But how can you make sure your website isn’t just gathering dust in this digital world? Keep reading….

Great article! Social Media is great for helping people find you, but it shouldn't come as a surprise that the SM algorithms work hard to keep people on social media rather than heading to your adventure business' website. How often have you heard people complain that a change in the algorithm means they're not getting seen as much anymore? And SM make it so convenient for you as a business owner who wants to do other things that it is understandable if we all overlook our websites. At our peril as you point out.
